The 7 Best AI Receptionists for UK Businesses (2026)

Seven AI receptionists compared for UK service businesses — what each does, what it costs, and which fit estate agents, clinics and mortgage brokers. Plus the option the roundups skip: not running a tool at all.

Founder, Cognumi

Rumi is the founder of Cognumi, a managed enquiry-handling service for independent UK estate agents, clinics and mortgage brokers.

A receptionist at a busy dental practice has a patient at the desk, another on hold, and a third call ringing out. The third caller is a new patient. By the time anyone can ring back, they have booked somewhere else. That is the problem the AI receptionist category exists to solve: software that answers the phone with an AI voice, takes a message or books an appointment, and passes anything complicated to a person.

The category has grown fast, and most of the comparison articles ranking these tools are written by the vendors themselves. This one is different in two ways. First, we are not an AI receptionist — Cognumi handles written enquiries, not phone calls — so we have no rank to protect. Second, every claim below comes from each vendor's own website, checked in October 2026, and where something could not be verified we say so.

A note on how we compared. We have not paid for and run these tools. This comparison is based on each product's own published features, pricing and UK availability as shown on its website in October 2026. Where a vendor publishes no price, we say "no public pricing". Where a US-built tool shows no evidence of UK phone number support on its own site, we flag that rather than assume.

The seven at a glance

  • Moneypenny AI Receptionist — the established UK name, with real human fallback
  • Clero AI — built for UK clinics, dental and GP practices
  • Apex27 AgentAI — estate agents who use (or will use) the Apex27 CRM
  • VoiceProp AI — UK estate and letting agents, from £79 a month
  • JustCall AI Voice Agent — teams already on the JustCall phone system
  • Smith.ai — hybrid AI-plus-human answering, if US-based handling is acceptable
  • Rosie — the cheapest way to try the category, with a UK caveat

Moneypenny AI Receptionist

Moneypenny is the UK's best-known phone answering company, and its AI receptionist product answers calls around the clock: lead qualification, appointment scheduling, call routing, FAQs, message taking, and real-time summaries. Its standout feature is the fallback — when the AI reaches its limits, the call can hand off to Moneypenny's live UK-based receptionists or to your own team, which no AI-only tool can match.

Pricing: no public pricing. Moneypenny quotes around your requirements, and its site claims the AI option can cost substantially less than traditional people-first answering.

Best for: any UK service business that wants a brand it recognises and a human safety net behind the AI. Moneypenny runs sector demo lines, including property and legal.

Clero AI

Clero is a UK-built AI voice receptionist for healthcare: dental practices, GP surgeries and pharmacies. It answers patient calls 24/7, books into practice management systems including EMIS and SystmOne, triages urgent cases for escalation, makes outbound appointment confirmations and recalls, and sends call summaries by email, SMS or WhatsApp. Data is hosted in the UK.

Pricing: no public pricing — tailored to call volume, quoted after a demo. Onboarding within about a week, with existing numbers forwarded or ported.

Best for: private clinics and dental practices that want a UK healthcare specialist rather than a generic tool. For UK healthcare, this is the clearest vertical fit we found.

Apex27 AgentAI

Apex27 is a UK estate agency CRM, and AgentAI is its built-in AI receptionist. It answers calls, books viewings, prequalifies applicants, handles valuation requests and maintenance reports, and transfers emergencies to staff immediately — with everything logged into the CRM automatically.

Pricing: £150 per month plus 20p per minute, cancel any time (as published October 2026). The CRM itself is priced separately.

Best for: estate and letting agents already on Apex27, or open to moving. The integration is the point — calls become CRM records without anyone typing.

VoiceProp AI

VoiceProp, from the UK proptech firm ModelProp, is an AI receptionist built specifically for estate and letting agents. It answers 24/7 in the agency's brand voice, takes messages, books viewings and valuations into the CRM, and hands off to a human where needed.

Pricing: from £79 a month per product, excluding VAT, with a full product suite available (as published October 2026).

Best for: independent UK agencies that want a property-specific tool without changing CRM.

JustCall AI Voice Agent

JustCall is a business phone system, and its AI voice agent is an add-on rather than a standalone product: it answers, qualifies, books appointments, logs to your CRM, and warm-transfers calls to your team with a summary attached.

Pricing: pay-as-you-go at $0.99 per minute, or $99 a month for 100 minutes and $249 for 300 minutes — on top of JustCall's seat plans (as published October 2026).

Best for: teams already running their phones through JustCall. Buying a whole phone system just for the AI agent makes less sense.

Smith.ai

Smith.ai offers AI-first, hybrid and human-first answering tiers, with live-agent escalation available per call. It is a polished product with transparent pricing — and one significant consideration for UK buyers: the only geography its site states is its 500+ North America-based receptionists, and it does not advertise UK number support.

Pricing: AI receptionist from $0 a month for 25 calls (then per-call), $150 a month on Pro, $500 on Enterprise (as published October 2026).

Best for: businesses comfortable with US-based call handling and dollar billing. UK buyers should confirm number availability and data handling before committing.

Rosie

Rosie is the most accessible way to find out whether an AI receptionist suits your business at all: a 7-day free trial, plans from $49 a month, and a simple setup where the AI answers, takes messages, books appointments and filters spam, with a summary and recording for every call.

Pricing: $49, $149 and $299 a month tiers by call minutes (as published October 2026).

Best for: experimenting cheaply. The caveat: Rosie's site offers US area codes and makes no mention of UK numbers, so treat it as a way to learn the category rather than a confirmed UK solution.

Two names you will see in other roundups

Synthflow appears in many "best AI receptionist" lists at $29 a month. That price no longer exists: as of October 2026 its own pricing page lists enterprise contracts starting at $30,000 a year. It has become an enterprise voice-AI platform, not a small business receptionist.

Dialzara and My AI Front Desk publish attractive US pricing (from $29 and $79 a month respectively), but neither states UK availability on its site. If a roundup recommends them to a UK audience without that caveat, the roundup was probably not written for a UK audience.

The option the roundups skip: not running a tool at all

Every product above answers phone calls. But look at where a modern service business's enquiries actually arrive: portal messages, website forms, email, WhatsApp, Instagram DMs. For many estate agents, clinics and brokers, most new business now starts in writing — and an AI receptionist leaves every one of those channels exactly as uncovered as before.

There is also a second difference that matters as much as the channel: every tool above is something you set up, tune and monitor yourself. The alternative category is a managed service — where the provider runs the workflow for you, with a person reviewing anything sensitive before it goes out.

That is the category Cognumi is in. We run enquiry handling for independent UK estate agents, clinics and mortgage brokers across written channels: every enquiry answered within minutes from your approved information, qualified, and handed to your team as a structured summary — with human oversight built in, month to month. We wrote a fuller comparison of the two categories in AI receptionist vs managed operations, and if you are weighing tools against simply hiring someone, see what hiring a receptionist really costs.

Which should you choose?

UK estate and letting agents: Apex27 AgentAI if you are on (or moving to) its CRM; VoiceProp if you want property-specific answering without changing CRM; Moneypenny if you want the established name with human fallback. If most of your enquiries are portal messages and web forms rather than calls, a managed written-channel workflow covers more of your actual volume.

Private clinics and dental practices: Clero is the standout UK vertical fit, with NHS-system integrations and UK data hosting. Pair it with a written-channel workflow if your new patient enquiries arrive mostly through your website and social channels.

Mortgage brokers: honestly, there is a gap — we found no verified UK vertical AI receptionist for broking. Moneypenny's human fallback makes it the safer generic choice for regulated conversations. For the evening and weekend enquiries that arrive in writing, that is exactly the ground a managed enquiry workflow covers.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI receptionists work with UK phone numbers?

The UK-built options — Moneypenny, Clero, Apex27 AgentAI, VoiceProp — yes. The US-built tools in this list either do not state UK support on their sites or offer US area codes only, so confirm before you buy.

How much does an AI receptionist cost in the UK?

Published UK pricing runs from around £79 a month (VoiceProp) to £150 a month plus per-minute charges (Apex27 AgentAI). The biggest UK names — Moneypenny and Clero — publish no pricing and quote around your call volume. US tools advertise from around $29–$150 a month, with the UK availability caveats above.

Will callers know they are talking to AI?

Usually, yes — current AI voices are good but recognisable, and reputable providers identify themselves. What matters more is what happens at the edges: whether the AI can hand a confused or urgent caller to a real person. That fallback is the main thing separating the options above.

What about the enquiries that do not come in by phone?

An AI receptionist does not touch them. Website forms, portal enquiries, email, WhatsApp and social messages need their own process — handled either by your team or by a managed enquiry service that covers written channels with human oversight.
